What are the warning signs of sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes a person to stop breathing for short periods while sleeping. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when the airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to a range of health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Here are some warning signs of sleep apnea:

1. Loud and persistent snoring

This is the most common sign of sleep apnea. It is usually loud and may include pauses or gasps.

2. Gasping or choking during sleep

This can be a sign that you have stopped breathing and your body is trying to get air.

3. Daytime sleepiness

If you feel tired during the day despite getting enough sleep at night, you may have sleep apnea.

4. Morning headache

Sleep apnea can cause low oxygen levels in the blood, which can lead to headaches in the morning.

5. Difficulty concentrating

Sleep apnea can cause daytime fatigue, which can make it hard to focus and concentrate.

6. Mood changes

Sleep apnea can cause irritability, depression, and other mood changes.

7. Dry mouth or sore throat

Breathing through the mouth can cause dry mouth or sore throat.

8. Restless sleep

If you toss and turn a lot during sleep, it may be a sign of sleep apnea.

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor for a diagnosis and treatment.

How to diagnose sleep apnea?

Here are some steps to diagnose sleep apnea:

1. Consult a doctor

If you suspect you have sleep apnea, the first step is to visit a doctor. Your doctor will take a medical history and perform a physical exam.

2. Discuss symptoms

Tell your doctor about your symptoms, including loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, feeling tired after a full night's sleep, and morning headaches.

3. Take a sleep study

A sleep study, also called a polysomnogram, is the most common way to diagnose sleep apnea. You may be asked to spend the night at a sleep center, where your breathing, heart rate, and brain activity will be monitored.

3. Monitor oxygen levels

A test called an oximetry can measure the oxygen levels in your blood while you sleep. This test can be done at home using a small device that clips onto your finger.

4. Consider other tests

In some cases, other tests such as a CT scan or MRI may be necessary to determine the cause of your sleep apnea.

Once a diagnosis of sleep apnea is made, your doctor will discuss treatment options with you. Treatment options may include lifestyle changes, such as losing weight or quitting smoking, and using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which delivers air pressure through a mask to help keep your airway open during sleep.

  • I have been monitoring my O2, pulse and movement for about three years, and I include information about the status (exercise, food, alcohol use, meds, etc.) to see how these factors affect (if at all) drops in my measured O2 and pulse rate. I have found some correlations between usage of some meds and alcohol with my O2 score. It would be great if there were a blog of users that could compare notes.

  • I’ve been using a cpap machine for many years and I would like to buy a new cpap from you people. Will a prescription be necessary? I’d rather not bother to get one since I’ve been using one for so long(20 years at least).
